Description
A single heron steps away from the crowd, stretched in clean profile along a slender cottonwood branch, its long neck and sharp bill pointed into the last of the light while a companion’s blurred gray form keeps to the shadows below. The canopy closes around the bird in layers of green and gold. It is the loner’s hour, that short spell of a July evening when even a rookery bird wants a branch to itself.
