Description
A pair of juvenile herons stand pressed together at the nest’s edge, both yellow eyes trained on the same point off-frame right, as if the neighbors two branches over were doing something worth remembering. The left two-thirds of the frame belongs to the cottonwood itself, its lichen-silvered limbs winding through warm, hazy evening light. It is a portrait of siblings keeping watch together, and keeping score.
