Description
The two nests of the big cottonwood face each other across an open stretch of gold field, the upper-left pair standing straight-backed and formal, the lower-right pair hunkered low, one bird fussing with its feathers like it’s late getting ready. Pale limbs and heavy green leaves divide the frame into rooms, the canola glowing through the middle like a lit doorway. Every rookery has its tidy house and its lived-in one. Evening light does both of them favors.
