Description
Tucked into the leafy edge of the cottonwood, one heron stands tall and alert while its companion hunkers low beside it, neck folded away for the night. The field beyond has gone to a warm, hazy gold that fills the background like a wash of watercolor. Rookery custom says somebody keeps watch through the gossip hour, and tonight the tall one drew the duty. A tender, unposed pairing in soft July evening light.
