Description
Two herons hold a slender branch at the cottonwood’s edge, the taller standing sentry with neck drawn up while the other settles lower, shoulders hunched, plainly ready for the day to be over. Beyond them the canola takes the last pink-gold light across its whole width. One bird keeps the watch so the other can rest; that is the arrangement, though nobody remembers agreeing to it. A quiet, atmospheric frame from the close of a July evening.
