Description
Two herons share one branch and face precisely opposite directions: the pale-necked juvenile gazing right into the low sun, the dark-capped bird behind it staring left into the leaves. Around them the cottonwood canopy glows in two tones, deep green above, sunwashed gold below. Whatever passed between these two earlier in the day, the matter is clearly not resolved, and the photograph is better for it.
