Description
You have to look twice to find the heron here, tucked at the heart of the cottonwood with only its striped throat and lifted bill betraying it above the pale tangle of the nest. Sun-struck leaves close over the scene like a curtain drawn early. Every rookery keeps one bird like this, the neighbor who hears everything, repeats nothing, and is somehow always home.
