Bookends Under the Big Sky

At the heart of a towering cottonwood, two herons stand pressed together facing opposite directions, their raised necks forming a near-perfect mirrored pair against the hazy blue of the lake and mountains behind. The gold of the field shows at the lower left, and the tree’s full crown fills the frame around them, making the birds a small, deliberate center in a big country. Whether it is courtship or merely an old alliance, they are plainly a matched set, and the whole rookery knows it.
