Description
Seen straight down from above the canopy, a heron steadies itself on a branch with wings half-raised, inches from the nest where its nestmate sits low in the swirl of white sticks. A third bird perches in the sunlit green below, studiously facing the other way. Somebody is arriving late, and somebody in that nest is going to want to know where they’ve been. The low sun rakes across the cottonwood crown, turning the whole scene into a lit map of the neighborhood.
