Description
The closest study of the trio, this frame catches the heron’s yellow eye bright in the low sun, its slate feathers warmed to pewter above the shaggy sprawl of the nest. Sunburnt canola glows soft and out of focus through the cottonwood leaves, and the whole crown of the tree leans in as if to listen. This is the bird that knows what happened in the north nest at supper time, and is not yet saying.
