Description
Three great blue herons hold their places in a single frame of dense cottonwood green, the ripening canola showing gold through every gap in the leaves. The one on the sun-bleached stick nest stands dead center and bolt upright, plainly in charge, while the two on the flanking branches keep their necks folded and their opinions to themselves. It is the whole neighborhood at a glance, arranged as neatly as chairs on a porch in the last calm light of a July evening.
