Threats to the Great Blue Heron: What Puts Colonies and Birds at Risk
Great Blue Herons weathered the 20th century well, but breeding colonies remain vulnerable, and new pressures — from booming Bald Eagle populations to climate-driven shifts — are emerging.1 Here is the full threat picture, ranked by current impact in the scientific and agency literature.
1. Human disturbance at colonies
The primary source of breeding failure at heronries. Herons are exquisitely sensitive early in the nesting cycle: repeated intrusion by people, dogs, drones, boats, chainsaws, trucks, or low-flying aircraft flushes adults, exposes eggs and chicks to predators and weather, and can trigger wholesale colony abandonment.12 Of 27 documented colony abandonments in British Columbia, 17 were caused by human activity near the colony — tree cutting, flooding, vehicle use, even researcher activity.3 Agency guidance is concrete: keep foot traffic at least 100 m from colonies during nesting season; herons foraging away from the colony tolerate people at about 50 m.2 Some urban colonies habituate — Stanley Park's birds nest above a parking lot — but new disturbance types still cause failures.34
2. Habitat loss and fragmentation
Herons need two habitats in proximity: shallow-water foraging and secure nesting trees. Residential and commercial development eliminates both, especially along valley bottoms and coastlines where colonies concentrate.35 In the Strait of Georgia region, monitoring documented at least 12 colony sites lost primarily to habitat destruction; about 80% of Canada's Pacific herons nest in the two most heavily developed coastal regions.5 Loss of beaver flowages (through trapping) removes prime nesting wetlands in the Northeast.6 Forest operations near nest trees are regulated in Oregon and BC for this reason.7
3. Bald Eagle predation and harassment
A paradoxical threat born of conservation success: as eagle populations rebounded since the 1980s, attacks on heron colonies more than doubled in frequency on the BC coast, and eagles now discourage nesting, kill juveniles and adults, and force colony relocations.35 Maine attributes much of its coastal-island collapse (down 93% since 1983) to eagles.6
4. Contaminants and water quality
As top-level fish-eaters, herons bioaccumulate persistent pollutants. Legacy contaminants — PCBs, DDT/DDE, mercury — have declined since monitoring began (St. Lawrence eggs: mercury −40%, PCBs −63%, DDE −83% from program baselines), but PBDE flame retardants emerged as a concern, measured at levels exponentially increasing in BC heron tissues, and elevated mercury is implicated in declines of Florida's "great white heron" population.8910 Contaminants don't usually kill outright; they degrade reproduction, growth, and immunity at chronic levels.8

What works
Buffer zones and seasonal restrictions around colonies; protecting tall nesting trees near foraging wetlands; signage and education at accessible heronries; beaver-friendly wetland policy; contaminant regulation (which demonstrably works — egg chemistry improved after PCB/DDT/PBDE phase-outs); and long-term colony monitoring so declines are caught early.278
